Why the Flood?

A global Flood as the Bible describes, is critical to all of Scripture.  If there were not a worldwide, mountain-covering flood of water, then the Bible cannot be trusted in any other area.  The Biblical record states that Noah’s ark came to rest in the “mountains of Ararat” which is a valid location on earth.  The finding of the ark would be the archaeological find of the millennium!  (Click here for more.) While the news of this find would not cause every skeptic or atheist to accept the Bible as true, it would show to many that the Bible is trustworthy.

What Does the Bible say?

The Flood record of Genesis 6-8 is not limited solely to Genesis.  For instance, God referred to the Flood to illustrate His second coming and His promise to Israel:

Luke 17:26, 27  “As it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man.  They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.”

Isaiah 45:9 “For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee….”

A literal, earth-covering Flood is extremely important to ALL of Scripture!

Noah’s Ark:  Feasible?

The book entitled, “Noah’ Ark: A Feasibility Study” by John Woodmorappe, is an excellent resource that covers a great deal more than this brief article can cover.  (You may purchase this resource here.)

The familiar boat-shaped caricature of an ark with animals and Noah standing on the deck is totally false.  The cartoon version actually hinders the truth since it presents a historical event as a fairy tale.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  While we do not know all of the details of the Flood and of the ark itself, we can rest upon the fact that Jesus said that the Flood happened.  And the evidence supports the flood as an historical event!

Some of the details, for instance, involve whether the ark was large enough to hold all of the animals.  The Bible states that God told Noah to take at least two of each “kind” of creature onto the ark, and that the animals would “come unto thee.”

Gen 6:19, 20 "And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee..."

Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive."

The Biblical stipulation of only the animal “kinds” being on the ark (as opposed to each species of animal) greatly reduces the space needed.  Add to this the fact that the ark held only earth-dwelling creatures, and you significantly reduce the need for space.  The length of the ark, compared to a football field, would have been at least one and a half football fields!  Truly, there was plenty of room for the animals and for people.  At this size, the ark could have held at least 522 railroad stock cars!  From dinosaurs to birds, every living earth-dwelling, air-breathing creature was represented by at least two, a male and a female.

Fossils and Canyons: Evidences of the Flood?

While evolutionists, atheists, agnostics, and skeptics worldwide do not accept the Biblical account of the Flood, there are many who are receptive to evidence that supports the Biblical flood.  The most numerous of these are fossils:  billions of dead things, buried in rock layers, laid down by water all over the earth.  The typical evolutionary view of the rock layers states that “millions of years” is represented by each layer.  In contrast, a “Flood geology” view sees the same layers as a result of the Flood of Noah’s day.

While canyons are said to have formed over “millions of years,” the canyons at Mt. St. Helens in Washington state were formed rapidly! Mudflows from the 1980 eruption carved brand new canyons in only 9 hours!  What we have learned from the eruption of Mt. St. Helens confirms a catastrophic formation of canyons rather than a gradual formation of them over “millions of years.”  (Click here for more.)
